Calgary’s casinos run the gamut from poker tables and slot machines to entertainment facilities with live music, bowling lanes and bingo. Here are seven top places in the city to gamble your hard-earned cash, whatever your game.
CASH CASINO
Poker fans flock to Cash Casino for the tournaments, as well as the regular cash games; check website for schedules. The gaming space, just under 4,500 sq m, also has 665 machines and 39 table games, as well as two restaurants and a bar.
CASINO CALGARY
Western-themed casino with 640 slot machines, 24-hour poker, electronic horse racing and table games such as craps, roulette, blackjack, baccarat, Caribbean stud and sic bo, as well as two restaurants and a lounge.
DEERFOOT INN & CASINO
The Deerfoot is more of an entertainment centre than a casino, and includes a hotel, four restaurants, bar and frequent concerts by big-name acts such as April Wine, Alannah Miles, Chiliwack, Randy Travis and and 54-40. The gaming floor includes 600 gaming machines, 32 live action games and a 24-hour poker room.
ELBOW RIVER INN & CASINO
This sleek new casino sits, as its name suggests, on the Elbow River just south of downtown. The facility, just under 7,500 sq m, includes 630 slot machines, 45 gaming tables, live entertainment, lounges and quality restaurants (especially for a casino). The 24-hour poker room is sizable and features high and low limit Texas Hold’em and cash games.
GREY EAGLE CASINO
The biggest casino in the Calgary area, Grey Eagle sits on the Tsuu T'ina reserve just west of city limits. The extensive facility is the only one with designated smoking areas and an adjacent bingo hall. The 7,800 sq m gaming space has 600 gaming machines, 59 table games, 24-hour poker, as well as two restaurants, two bars and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages.
SILVER DOLLAR CASINO
This entertainment complex, formerly Frank Sisson’s Silver Dollar Casino, has hosted renowned acts such as Billy Ray Cyrus, Garth Brooks and Bo Diddley. The complex has a gaming area with more than 500 slot machines, 36 tables and a private poker room, as well as bowling alley, restaurants and Calgary’s largest banquet facility, just shy of 1,900 sq ft.
STAMPEDE CASINO
Right on the Stampede grounds and a short walk from the Saddledome, Stampede Casino has 300 slot machines, 21 table games and a Las Vegas-style poker room with periodic tournaments and corporate poker parties. The Mavericks Dining Room & Lounge and WildCards Café & Saloon have generous drink specials and happy hours, as well as free Sunday tea. In June 2008 Stampede Casino will open in a new venue a short walk from its current location.
