Jasper to Miette Hot Springs

Begin this 59 km (37 mi) trip by heading east from town along the Yellowhead Highway 16. Eight km (5 mi) east of Jasper detour 12 km (7 mi) along Snaring River Rd to the partially restored, log-built Ewan Moberly Homestead where a prominent Métis settled 100 years ago. Continue on Hwy 16 to Jasper Lake and the Canadian Rockies' only sand dunes formed by sediment, changing water levels and winds. Talbot Lake to the right is good for pike fishing—boat rentals can be arranged in town at On-Line Sport & Tackle. Turn right at Miette Rd 42 km (26 mi) from Jasper—it's 17 km (10.5 mi) south to the springs (bears can often be spotted). At the turnoff is Poco’s Café, a good lunch spot, and the short Pocahontas Coal Mine interpretive trail to ruins of an early 1900s town and a nice view. One km (.6 mi) south is Punchbowl Falls. A farther 7 km (5 mi) is Ashlar Ridge viewpoint—see the long limestone slab and Fiddle Valley vista. End of the road is Miette Hot Springs (May to mid-Oct), home to 40°C pools, café, picnic sites and walking trails.
