Tasos a true sandwich artist and donair master
On a drive-by, you might be tempted to dismiss High Voltage as just another sub or donair shop from its boxy gas-station-reborn-as-eatery exterior, but to do so would be to risk a lightning bolt from Zeus himself, who appears to be on excellent terms with Tasos Gnafakis, the affable Greek-born restaurateur who has taken four words to his gastronomic heart: crispy, tasty, unique and European.
“That’s the beauty of this place,” says the man from Kavala. “People look at it in different ways. Some people think it’s Greek. Some people think it’s donairs. Some people think it’s grilled sandwiches or wraps. In reality, it’s a mix of everything rather than a variation of one thing.”
Yes, while it’s true that Tasos serves up what are arguably the dreamiest donairs in Edmonton — Greek, East Coast, Caribbean Jerk and Blue Cheese, to name a few of his creations — don’t forget his grilled sandwiches on a sourdough loaf that include the Bigfoot (a pizzainspired wonder), Turkey Grill and Montreal Smoked Meat, as well as his pita-friendly Xtreme Gyros and Wraps.
“When we say fresh — we mean it.” Preservatives and food colours are a no-no here. Microwave? Never. His bread and pitas hail from local bakeries daily. Tasos imports his olive oil, oregano and sun-dried sea salt from Greece. High Voltage is coming up on its 10th anniversary this fall, and deservedly so. Find out for yourself why, most deliciously, his success is no fluke.
From Braised Bison Short Ribs and Alberta Prime Rib to Classic New York Striploin and Vic’s Signature 20- ounce Bone-In Rib-Eye, Vic’s Steakhouse at the fourstar Mayfield Inn & Suites runs the beef bases with the élan of a culinary Babe Ruth. Chicken Whisper “curry” and the meeker tastebuds among us run screaming for the Tums. Four Rooms Restaurant & Lounge puts the lie to this notion with its sweet yet flavourful, gentle rendition of Banana Curry Chicken. “It’s different,” says Chef Ohnas Asiff. “The banana is mainly there to make the dish a little bit sweeter. The curry itself isn’t overly spicy, either. It’s a dish that anyone can enjoy, including your typical meat and potatoes person.”
As surely as a bocce ball rolls downhill, it goes without saying that Zucchero Cappuccino Bar & Panini Grill makes tasty sandwiches (Italian Sausage with Roasted Peppers; Southern Smoked Chicken; Prosciutto and Artichoke; to name a few). But the perfect chaser is the Gelato Affogato: a frosty scoop of bacio (chocolate & hazelnut) or vanilla gelato atop a pipin’ hot shot of espresso coffee with whipped cream, chocolate or caramel sauce. Bacio is also Italian for “kiss” — and this one feels sooo good

Amid the soft lighting, brick floor, wooden beams and European ambience of The Créperie, genial host Hans Kuhnel flaunts a menu with an enchanting French flair. And why not? Large wine lists, portion-proper tapas and a tiny little (albeit chic and cozy) space. That’s Tzin Wine Bar in a nutshell. Available in two-ounce samplers, by the glass or bottle, Tzin’s wine selection is extensive and changes often.
