Chinese Art Wows Campus

Sep. 18, 2008 - Jan. 24, 2009 When art-savvy Edmontonians call Brilliant Strokes: Chinese Paintings from the Mactaggart Art Collection a world-class art show, they aren't exaggerating. These 17 historically significant works - culled from the 100 paintings sitting in the 750-piece, $35-million Mactaggart Art Collection - afford a unique best-of peek inside one of the world's top four collections of historical Chinese paintings, says Janine Andrews, Executive Director of the University of Alberta Art Collection (Museums and Collections Services). "This is the best of the best, an opportunity to see 15th to 20th Century paintings you can only see in China's Palace Museum or the Met in New York." The show runs in the U of A Museums Gallery A in the TELUS Centre (corner of 87th Avenue and 111th Street, 780-492-5834).

Hockey, Renaissance Score At Aga

Oct. 4, 2008 - Jan. 4, 2009 Never accuse the Art Gallery of Alberta of too narrow a focus in its exhibits. Ever-daring, ever-eclectic and ever-accessible, the AGA has programmed a stunning display of Renaissance print-works by seminal German artist Albrecht Dürer to coincide with a ground-breaking show of hockey-themed art! The former exhibit is one of an ongoing series of canonic art shows from Canada’s National Gallery. “This is a great show that gives people access to a great collection,” says Catherine Crowston, AGA head curator. The equally exciting hockey show boasts the work of 25 contemporary Canadian artists who explode accepted visual ideas about Canada’s favourite game. Included are studies for the late Ken Danby’s überinfluential In the Crease painting from the early ‘70s. “It’s a great mix of work and very, very crowded in there,” says Crowston. Works of a Renaissance Master: The Works of Albrecht Dürer runs until Nov. 2 while Arena: The Art of Hockey runs at the Art Gallery of Alberta, #100, Enterprise Square, 10230 Jasper Ave., 780-422-6223.

Art Meets Science

Nov. 14 - Feb. 1, 2009 What do you get when you cross artists with scientists, bio-ethicists and lawyers? The multi-disciplinary Imagining Science show. Catherine Crowston, curator of the Art Gallery of Alberta, says this boundary-blurring show addresses the rapidly changing world of genetics, bio-technologies and human engineering via innovative, accessible collaborations between the artsy and technically-oriented crowds. Guaranteed innovative, this show's a Franken-art spectacular chock-a-block with wonder and excitement as it references scientific tools, devices and hardware. The show runs at the Art Gallery of Alberta (#100, Enterprise Square, 10230 Jasper Avenue, 780-422-6223).
