Nova Scotia Day Trip Ideas There’s lots to see and do, all within a short drive of Halifax
Embrace the fire and passion of flamenco with Fall for Flamenco 2008, running from September 27 to October 6. Atlantic Canada’s first and only flamenco festival showcases music and dance at various venues around the city.
Running from October 10 to 19 , the Maritime Fall Fair, at Exhibition Park on Prospect Road “brings the country to the city.” Highlights include petting zoos, a professional rodeo, agriculture displays, horse and cattle competitions, midway rides and family entertainment.
October 12: Country diva Carrie Underwood performs at the already sold-out Metro Centre. Little Big Town opens the show.
October 13: Nashville legend Marty Stuart & His Superlatives plays a rare Halifax show at the Dalhousie Arts Centre.
October 28: On the Road Again host Wayne Rostad visits the Dalhousie Arts Centre, sharing stories and songs about the places he visits.
Atlantic Canada’s largest and most ambitious theatre company, Neptune Theatre on Argyle Street, opens its new season with The Devil’s Disciple, continuing through October 12. George Bernard Shaw penned the dark comedy about a rascally drinker in Puritan New Hampshire. Former Shaw Festival artistic director Christopher Newton brings his considerable directing talents to this stage classic.
• October 1: Punk veterans Bad Religion take the stage at the Halifax Forum on Windsor Street.
• October 17: Shock-rock king Alice Cooper brings his biggest stage show in 20 years to the Halifax Metro Centre on Duke Street.
• October 18: Grammy-winning producer and musician Daniel Lanois performs at the Marquee Club on Gottingen Street.
• October 19: Chart-topping rocker Lenny Kravitz brings his Get on the Bus with the Love Revolution tour to the Metro Centre.
• October 20: Singer/songwriter David Usher, formerly of Moist, takes the stage at the Dalhousie Arts Centre on University Avenue.
Art lovers won’t want to miss Photopolis, a citywide celebration of photography with exhibitions in art galleries and other venues around the city from October 1 to November 15. Highlights include Touchstones at Viewpoint Gallery on Barrington Street. Also check out Underground, Hannah Minzloff’s photographic study of transit systems, displayed on a working Metro Transit bus.
Live Art Dance Productions brings a pair of world-class contemporary dance shows to the Dalhousie Arts Centre. From October 2 to 4, Montreal’s Compagnie Marie Chouinard offers a sensual and surreal take on Orpheus and Eurydice. Following that is Vancouver’s Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg with Nick and Juanita: Livin’ in my Dreams. The gender-bending satire runs from October 9 to 11.
Marrying the musical traditions of Nova Scotia’s black, native, Celtic and Acadian heritage into one spectacular stage show, Drum wraps up its month-long run at the Bella Rose Arts Centre on Thomas Raddall Drive in Clayton Park. Originating in Halifax, the production has toured North America to wild acclaim. It continues until October 12.
