CATCH A SHOW The Shaw Festival has long been NOTL’s chief attraction, featuring large-scale musicals and dramatic productions in history-steeped theatres. The proscenium-arched Festival Theatre is the romantic flagship. On the marquee this season: Anne-Marie MacDonald’s Belle Moral, G.B. Shaw’s Getting Married, Ferenc Molnár’s farcical The President (adapted by Toronto playwright Morwyn Brebner) and Leonard Bernstein’s Wonderful Town.
TAKE A STROLL Enjoy a relaxing amble down the town’s main strip, Queen Street. Among the charming boutiques and bakeries, find unique millinery, pottery, jewellery, Niagara fruit jams, home-style fudge and more. Stop at the 1869 Niagara Apothecary, a museum replete with crystal lamps, porcelain jars and butternut cabinets, and Wine Country Vintners (27 Queen St., 1-905-468-1881), a neighbourhood wine boutique, for a quick tasting.
PACK A PICNIC A promenade through residential areas, lined with grand Georgian and Edwardian homes, will escort you to the Queen’s Royal Park (at Front and King streets) on the Niagara River: the town’s picnic capital.
PARTAKE IN A TIPPLE Have a pint and discuss the night’s entertainment at The Olde Angel Inn—a now-historic wood-panelled watering hole founded in 1816.
