Each night when the sun sets, the waterfront becomes aglow with a centuries-old Chinese tradition. Through to October 12, the Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival populates the shores of Lake Ontario, this year with 32 new installations set in water and on land. Some 120,000 lights were used to illuminate this mesmerizing exhibit, the largest of its kind in North America, which brilliantly re-creates dinosaurs, animals, marine life and some of the world’s great architectural wonders. Built by master craftsmen from Zigong, China, these elaborate structures are also massive—some as tall as 18 metres. Complementing this colossal lighting spectacle is an international marketplace with food from Asia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Live chef demonstrations illustrate the fine art of fruit carving, plus dumpling and noodle making. Nightly entertainment on two stages features acts from China as well as local performers, including musicians, dancers and acrobats. Ontario Place, 955 Lake Shore Blvd. W., Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 10 p.m., admission $20 to $25; call 416-314-9900 for information.
